Catching up with Streamlight Video’s JP Palacio.

Events No Comments

AD 2 recently caught up with JP Palacio from Streamlight Video, who are sponsoring our web 2.0 educational event. Streamlight Video, which specializes in web 2.0 video, shared their thoughts on video, web 2.0 and our favorite viral hits.
JP Palacio from Streamlight Video

AD 2: How long have you been involved with video?

JP: I have been taking pictures and filming family holiday parties as long as I can remember. My dad bought a camcorder in the late 80s and I used it up until I went to college. LOL.

AD 2: Tell us a about your history and Streamlight Video:

JP: I went to New York University (NYU) and studied Film/Business Management. Worked for MTV for 3 years while trying to lift SLV off the ground. I ended up quitting MTV to pursue Streamlight Video full time. We established Streamlight Video in 2003. The last two years we have worked hard to build our client list up and we have been very successful.

Just in San Diego in the last six months we have produced streaming videos for:

Stingaree, Sidebar, Syndicate Auto, World Famous, Pipe’s cafe, Belo, Zen 5, Cabo Cantina, Aptera Automotive and about 30 others.

Aptera is the largest project that we have taken on its a series of 9 streaming videos you can see the first of the series at our website.

AD 2: When it comes to viral videos, what are the qualities that make it a hit? It seems like the most popular viral videos (Evolution of dance, Miss Teen South Carolina) are all live events? What are the challenges or opportunities in producing a web 2.0 hit?

JP: The quality that makes a video viral is depended on the ability to spread the information. 20 years ago the Miss Teen South Carolina video would of ended up in the nightly news or one of those TV shows that highlight bloobers and that would be the end of it. Instead it has been viewed 31 million times on You Tube because we currently have the capabilities to share information and to spread it quickly.

Yes, there has to be a relevant point of interest to the viewer, most viral video seem like they tend to be of the comedy genre, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make something viral if it’s not comedy.

The opportunities are endless when you can get 20-50 million people to sit through a 4-minute video that you created on your web-cam. Challenges are small, all you have to do is upload the video and it’s out there. Whether it’s going to get 1,000 views or million it depends on content.

JP Palacio from Streamlight Video

AD 2: Streamlight specializes in web 2.0, web video. How do you see web video being used (or further developed) in the future?

JP: When businesses small and large built their websites years ago the sites where two dimensional at best. They had some simple pictures and text explaining their product or service. It was 2 dimensional because that’s what technology allowed it to be. Now, due to broadband Internet we have the capabilities to receive and send information in the form of streaming video. Streamlight Video adds that third dimension on websites to allow the person to get the information in a streaming video. Which is far more efficient and most importantly effect to the business

AD 2: What type of video projects are more appropriate for the web, as opposed to TV. How do they compare cost wise?

JP: I don’t’ think there’s much a difference, the web and TV are so close to being one, you would be surprised. The only difference is that people attention span seems to be shorter on a computer than a TV. Most of the videos we are producing are in a shorter format, which ultimately means lower cost.

AD 2: Thanks for your time, JP. We look forward to your video production of Myspace vs Your Space, which will be hosted on our site.
